The current trainee strength is over 40. Some attend full time, others part time, averaging 22 a day. They are given training in a wide range of horticultural crafts and activities by qualified professional staff assisted by a dedicated group of volunteers.
Trainees also participate in the construction work and maintenance needed at the Nurseries. Suitable trainees, under staff supervision, also work on garden maintenance contracts at private houses, hotels and business premises in the area.
The work and progress of all trainees is reviewed regularly by a panel on which parents and social workers are represented.
In addition to the regular trainees, other groups, with their own staffs, use the facilities at the Nurseries.
Throughout the year, educational classes are held teaching numeracy, literacy and other life skills based around a horticultural theme.
